Grandma said there'd be Cake

You wore the coat because Grandma said there’d be cake.

There was not cake.

There was, however, a garden party you hadn’t been told about, three women drinking gin out of teacups, a neighbour who’d brought his accordion, and a heated disagreement about whether someone named Pauline had actually been invited.

By sunset, you’d learned two family secrets, lost $14 playing cards, and been asked rather pointedly whether you were “seeing anyone nice.”

Grandma knew exactly what she was doing.

The coat

Made from reclaimed vintage textiles, this one has all the sweetness of something pulled from the best linen cupboard in the house.

The body is a beautiful soft lavender quilt, stitched all over with a large-scale floral quilting pattern.

The sleeves and oversized patch pockets bring in pieces of a gloriously vintage patchwork pillowcase, complete with colourful fan blocks, tiny florals and prints that look like they’ve been waiting several decades for someone to take them out of the guest room and give them a much better life.

The result is wonderfully easy: generous, cocoon-y and lighthearted, with wide sleeves, an open front and deep pockets for your phone, lipstick, and whatever Grandma slips you on the way out.
