We were asked to turn the rubber apron into a Speedo.
We declined.
Not because it wouldn’t have been magnificent.
Because there are moments in the creative process when one must exercise restraint, and we simply could not bear to lose that much Daddy.
So here he is.
In all his delicious and wholesome glory.
The spectacular back panel began life as a vintage British advertising rubber apron for Daddie’s Favourite Sauce.
Please take a moment with that sentence.
Vintage. British. Advertising. Rubber apron.
Some materials arrive in the studio with very clear ideas about what they would like to become.
Some require you to immediately corner the international market.
Daddy had opinions.
We set him against a glorious deep indigo vintage quilt, then added an entirely unnecessary — and therefore absolutely essential — scarlet collar constructed from an absurd 1970s curtain sourced in Paris.
Part Sergeant Pepper. Part fire brigade. Part we’re not entirely certain what sort of establishment you’ve wandered into, but somebody appears to be in charge.
The oversized red pocket carries the colour through to the front, while the beautifully stitched indigo quilt attempts, unsuccessfully, to lend the whole affair an air of respectability.
It never stood a chance.
One of one, gloriously queer-adjacent, deeply unserious and made from a collection of vintage home textiles that had absolutely no business meeting each other.
And yet.
Daddy’s home.
Made from reclaimed vintage home textiles.
Measurements: 24.5" pit to pit, 29" shoulder to hem.
DESIGNER’S NOTE
When I found this vintage rubber apron kicking around Camden Town, I knew immediately that it was coming home with me.
Then, before I posted a single photo to Instagram, I did the only reasonable thing:
I tracked down and bought the only other known Daddie’s Favourite Sauce apron known to man.
Just in case someone saw mine and got there first.
Because apparently this is the sort of thing I worry about now. So contact me if you want a custom piece with the other apron. Even a speedo.
DADDIE’S FAVOURITE SAUCE
